Fiadh wrote home about her experiences with indigenous tribes and loggers.

Father Andrew, the Marines arrested a dozen loggers today. Last week, we found a hunting party of Korubo murdered. Fourteen men. The killers got them all, otherwise the Indians would have carried away their dead. The Korubo kill with four-foot long clubs called borduna. They’re not as advanced as the Arqueiros, who kill with blowguns and bows.

The Korubo didn’t have a chance against rifles. Fourteen men is seven percent of the Korubo population. There are only a couple hundred we know about.

The loggers killed most of them outright. Captured two men and tied them to trees. Then they poured gasoline from chainsaws onto their victims and set them on fire. We found the corpses, foraged by wild animals. The burned men were dragged into the bush. The animals left pieces of them tied to the trees. Scattered the rest all over the place.

Father Andrew, I can’t describe it.

We followed the loggers’ trail to their camp. I triangulated, like they taught us in Girl Scouts. Plotted the location on a map, checked against GPS. At Vila de Deus, I used Father Camos’s radio to contact Tieves. A gunboat and a platoon of Marines made the arrest.

What makes men do such things? Atrocities committed for a purpose are evil, but one can understand them. What can you make of atrocities committed for no reason? These have to be beyond evil. I believe because I have seen, I have the capacity to judge. For only God and those who have seen can judge. Is it a sin to believe I have that capacity? I don’t know, but I think I do.

I know about our martyrs. Terrible stories. Here, in the Selva, I see first-hand the evil men do. These things can’t be unseen. Father… they play like movies in my head. I can’t make them stop. Please, God. Make… them... stop...
